ARTISTIC STATEMENT Painting is a language with which the artist expresses views of his world, transmitted with imagination, sensibility and love for colours. Hence, if painting is for me a medium of communication, one may understand why the media subjects are interesting as inspiration for a great deal of my works. The painting without contents is acceptable when it is creative, but it has for me no more than a decorative value, even if I may find it beautiful. Painting with signification, when it is strong and original, may be nor beautiful neither decorative, but may communicate important features of our time and it will be a medium of communication with those somewhat inattentive to the current events and with those that will come after our life. They may discover that, after all, Human Being remains as he is, through time. If painting is a language understandable by many people, if it is beautiful and with pertinent signification, it deserves my preference. Joking and doing irony may be assumed as a hostile attitude towards negative realities surrounding us in our society. However an intention of "improving the world" through an artistic expression would be pretentious. Nevertheless, instead of crying, it is better to laugh, touching wounds with optimism and some hope; it is preferable to play, to dream and to go out here, to see farther. This is why my painting is how it is. José Barata |
